On November 4th, 2010, from 7-9:30pm, Boston International, with the support of the Consulate of Colombia in Boston will be hosting Reform and Policy in the Education Sector: From the US to Colombia, a panel discussion that will feature Cecilia Maria Valez, Colombia's former Minister of Education, Dr. Lisa Famularo, Research Director at the Rennie Center for Education Research and Policy and Dr. James Samels, Founder and CEO of Education Alliance. This event promises to be an informative discussion about the future of global education policy and issues currently under debate.

Landry & Arcari Oriental Rug and New England Home Magazine were proud to sponsor the "5 Under 40 Awards", spotlighting the hottest emerging talent in residential design in New England, including architecture, interiors, furniture, and home-design products and accessories.
Selected by an all-star committee of regional design leaders, 5 Under 40 winners are the people to watch, producing some of the most beautiful and innovative work available today. Each winner had the opportunity to design a custom rug produced by Landry & Arcari. Rugs were auctioned off at the "5 Under 40" gala on June 10, and proceeds benefitted Barakat.
The event took place Thursday, June 10, and saw some of the hottest emerging talent in residential design, all while supporting Barakat's work to promote female literacy in South and Central Asia.

As opinions abound about how to fix the situation in Afghanistan, typical Afghans, particularly women and girls, are overlooked and disempowered. Hosted by Barakat, "Defeating the Taliban through Education" had Prof. Nick Mills, author of KARZAI – The Failing American Intervention and the Struggle for Afghanistan, discuss the birth of democracy in Afghanistan, the challenges it faces, and how Afghan citizens can be empowered through education to overcome the Taliban. Nick Mills is an associate professor in the Journalism Department of Boston University’s highly regarded College of Communication. Mr. Mills had a long career as an award-winning journalist in Boston and New York. In 2004 he served as an advisor and trainer in the Office of the spokesman for the President of Afghanistan, in Kabul. In 2005, Mr. Mills spent three months in Kabul meeting with President Hamid Karzai, gathering material for his biography, which was released in August of 2007. In the 1980s Mr. Mills worked with the Afghan Resistance and was a founder of the Afghan Media Resource Center in Peshawar Pakistan in 1987.
