Pakistan Schools

Ersari Elementary School

Ersari Elementary School was Barakat’s first school set up in Pakistan, in 1994. Students benefit from a computer lab and library to supplement their regular literacy and math curriculum. The school currently educates more than 300 students, of which 71 are female.

Barakat Elementary School

Barakat Elementary School began in 1998 at the request of Turkmen refugees who reside in a different area of the Attock region, distant from Ersari Elementary School. There are currently 200 students at Barakat Elementary School, of which 35 are female.

Barakat Primary School

Barakat Primary School was started in 2002 to accommodate the overflow of students from Ersari Elementary School. Many more students applied for admission than could possibly be accomodated in the existing school, so Barakat established a new school to meet the growing demand. Students are assigned to a school based on proximity. There are currently 158 students at Barakat Primary School, of which 34 are girls.

Evening School for Girls

The Evening School for Girls was started to encourage parents to send their daughters to school, and takes place at each of the three schools. Because of cultural and religious beliefs, many parents had been hesitant to allow their daughters to study with boys. In response, Barakat created an alternative schedule for female students in the area, and hired a staff of all female teachers. This program educates 200 female students annually. The curriculum differs slightly from the day school, but the students are still taught Dari (the national language of Afghanistan), English, mathematics and computers.
