In May 2008, Barakat started a No Smoking campaign at its schools in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is an Islamic country, where drinking alcohol and gambling is prohibited according to the Islamic faith. However, smoking is a widespread practice among Afghan men.

K-12 Service Learning Program

Barakat is working at city schools to educate students, parents, teachers and administrators about “learning through service” opportunities that contribute to Barakat's mission.    The program works by identifying teachers, parents and schools that are interested in participating. Contact can be initiated by Barakat, school personnel, or through an interested intermediary such as a parent.
