Clinton, Obama honor activists on International Women's Day

Global events for International Women’s Day on March 9 emphasized the pressing need for women’s rights advocacy. In Washington, D.C., Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held the International Women of Courage Award ceremony on March 11 with First Lady Michelle Obama, honoring eight women who have stood out in the global fight for women’s rights.

Among the honorees was Wazhma Frogh, who has led the fight in Afghanistan against sexual abuse, rape, and domestic violence. Meanwhile, in Lahore, Pakistan, the day was observed with “great enthusiasm” as representatives from the Pakistan Worker’s Federation spoke of their work for greater equality in the workplace, increased access to education for women and girls, and domestic violence awareness.
