In Afghanistan, rights for women worsen

Rising violence and rape of women top the list of human rights abuses in Afghanistan in the UN’s annual report, which was released on March 5.

Sexual abuse and forced marriage remain an acceptable part of Afghan family and religious life. Rape of girls under 10 has been “growing tremendously,”¬†CNN adds, as abuse by the girls’ adult husbands remains a common facet of society. There may be a light at the end of the tunnel, however. The UN findings come a day after theNew York Times¬†reported that increasing numbers of Afghan women are seeking protection from abuse in shelters. “Women’s rights was a very new word for them,” an activist said. “But now we’re openly saying it.”
