Educational Needs of New Refugees
Following the government takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban in August 2021, new refugees came flooding into Pakistan, despite the border restrictions. They joined extended family as well as previous refugees they had known through family and tribal connections.
Education became one of the primary needs of new refugees. While the younger children were assimilated into the existing Barakat Schools, the older girls and women who had been studying in the higher grades in Kabul and other cities needed language classes in order for them to live in a new country, to re-enter the education system, to socialize and find their way.
This is where Barakat stepped in, providing language classes for the newcomers. To quote one of our newer students, “I love learning in Pakistan. If you are living in a country, you need to make communication with the local community, you need to speak the local language. Specially, I want to learn Urdu and English to get good skills and a positive point in my academic life."
